What interactive product can improve communication in pre-puberty children?

MY ROLE

My role was to develop and build the concept of a product that could provide interactions and communication between peers and parents during the pre-puberty.

USER RESEARCH

We started our research by asking children to draw their families and pets to have a better understanding of their thoughts. From the sketeches we observed how the environment and peers influence in their behaviour. After the sketching exercise interviews were made and we had found no problems with children in communicating with their parents.

So we interview parents who found it was a problem when getting to puberty, children became more closed to their parents.

Is communication between parents and children lacking a problem or part of their development?

Questioning the problem of children not talking with parents about their problems, we realised it was a problem if children don't talk with anybody, parents, peers or teachers. Therefor we developed a project to enhance communication with interaction.

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

Tangible objects open to social interactions and communication, therefor we created a prototype of a surface where users can place those tangible objects.

Inspired by the Japanese culture we built a board made of paper for children to place their origami and write their secrets or answer to other users secrets. By building a product they can ask for help and interact with others and share their thoughts without knowing whose problem is.

Building origami

RESULTS

The building-making of a tangible object created social interactions resulting in a natural communication development between parents and peers after testing.
